They are also used in refining processes for high temperature viscous products such as asphalt, vacuum tower bottoms and residual fuel oil.
Three-screw pumps are also widely used in crude oil pipeline services as well as barges and ships for collection, pressurization and loading. They are common on most merchant ships and in the engine rooms of many warships.
Flow rates range from 1 to 3300 GPM (4 to 13,250 L/M), or operating pressures of 4500 PSIG (310 BAR).
Three-screw pumps are also used for polymer pumping in the manufacture of synthetic fibers such as nylon and lycra, subject to material selection limitations.
Designs are now available in no-seal configurations, such as magnetic drivers and canning structures. Magnetically driven screw pumps are widely used to pump isocyanates, plastic parts that are difficult to seal with conventional techniques.
Pumps are now also available in an unsealed canned configuration.
